Here at Groupon Goods, we always want you to feel comfortable when reaching out to your primary business partners. We recently introduced you to your Account Management team, and this week we'd like to introduce you to your Buying team and let them share a little bit about themselves. The Buyers are your primary contacts for product planning and promotions, deal content and contract negotiations. Feel free to reach out with any questions you have!

How long have you been a Buyer with Groupon Goods?


Remco Paap: I have been a buyer at Groupon Goods for 4.5 years and have managed Automotive, HI Electrical, Toys & Games and Sport & Outdoors.


Akaash Shanker: I have been a Groupon Goods buyer for slightly under 10 months.


Jon Wagner:  I’ve been in buying for 3 years.


What product categories does your team cover?


Remco Paap: The Sports & Outdoors team manages Fan Shop, Golf, Outdoors, Cycling, Fitness, Action and Team Sports. My daily focus is on Fitness Accessories, Equipment and Technology.


Akaash Shanker: I manage Golf, Outdoors, Team Sports, Action Sports, & Cycling.


Jon Wagner: I buy for Fan Shop - All licensed product from the NFL, MLB, NCAA, NHL, NBA and Soccer.


What does a buyer do in the course of the day?


Remco Paap: Buyers create and execute an assortment strategy to support the Groupon Mission of becoming the Daily Habit.  A few of the daily tasks include reviewing category assortments, negotiating costs, managing marketing allocations and exploring new opportunities.


Akaash Shanker: We drive all strategy decisions for our categories. This includes creating an assortment to fill customers’ needs, while ensuring the assortment is relevant, exciting, and communicates value. On a daily basis, we make decisions about what products are being sold at what price points and how the customer can view these products. This is achieved by creating partnerships with vendors and maximizing these partnerships to drive positive financials for all involved.


Jon Wagner:  Buyers build vendor relationships and source new products to help grow the overall Goods assortment and support Groupon’s mission.  Every day is different and fast-paced with some common tasks including negotiating, marketing and merchandising.


When should vendors contact their buyer?


Remco Paap: Our Strategic Partners should contact us to collaborate on Assortment, Pricing, Inventory, and Marketing strategies.


Akaash Shanker: Contact us as much as you need to! If there are opportunities, concerns, updates, etc., the vendor should reach out. However, if we are not responding, or we need time to review, please be patient and we’ll be in touch as soon as we can.


Jon Wagner:  Reach out when new assortment opportunities arise or you’re eager to work with us on merchandising strategy for the current assortment. We can talk about marketing support, pricing and inventory.


What is your favorite thing about being a buyer?


Remco Paap: I love finding the latest items that will “Surprise & Delight” customers and drive sales for Goods.


Akaash Shanker: I really enjoy working with different kinds of products and seeing new innovations every day. It’s really exciting to be a filter for our millions of customers to ensure they’re buying the best products out there.


Jon Wagner: I enjoy being able to work with licensed sports product on a daily basis. I love sports (and am lucky to be born in Mass) and it’s fun to be able to talk sports as part of the daily grind. 


What is your favorite thing about working with Goods vendors?


Remco Paap: My favorite thing is building long term partnerships that enhance the customer shopping experience on our platform.


Akaash Shanker: I really enjoy creating partnerships where we can work together to drive business and discuss wins and losses, but then put business aside and have a meal or drink together.


Jon Wagner:  I love being able to build professional and personal vendor relationships.
